Athletics

Athletics at Blessed Sacrament Huguenot play an integral part in the development of the "whole child" educational experience. All students in Prep and High School are encouraged to participate in team sports. Blessed Sacrament Huguenot participates in the Virginia Commonwealth Conference (VCC) and offers 11 Varsity sports, 8 Junior Varsity sports and 4 Prep sports.

Winter

Blessed Sacrament Huguenot participates in the VCC for interscholastic sports. Member schools include Amelia Academy, Kenston Forrest, Richmond Christian, Southhampton Academy, The Steward School, and Tidewater Academy.

The VCC requires students taking six subjects for credit to pass five. Students who do not pass five of the six subjects are ineligible to play any sport for the next grading period until they improve their academic standing. An appeal can be made following the next interim or grading period. If there has been significant improvement in grades, a soild continued commitment to the team in spite of ineligibility, and a positive attitude, then the Athletic Review Committee can remove ineligibility status.

The VCC has a code of sportsmanship to guide us, to remind us, and to help us conduct ourselves in an appropriate manner. The "code" implies an expectation for all coaches, players, cheerleaders, and spectators. The "code" encompasses a few simple, basic rules:

  • Courtesy and respect for the rules, opponents, and officials.
  • Enthusiasm for playing the game and modesty and graciousness in victory or defeat.
  • Fairness and responsibility to the sport, to our opponents, and to our respective schools.

Specifically:

  • We shall not take part in any actions that are derogatory to our opponents or to the officals.
  • We shall respect the property and reputation of the opponents.
  • We shall refrain from using noisemakers and shall remain quiet during free throws at basketball games.
  • We shall demonstrate good sportsmanship by shaking hands at the end of each athletic contest.

To be effective, these ideals must be clearly expressed to head Athletic Directors, coaches, athletes, students, and spectators. Players and Cheerleaders will be held accountable for their actions if they wish to participate. Spectators will not be permitted to remain at the contest if their behavior is not acceptable. All should assist in the encouragement of proper behavior at every athletic contest.
